Trump invokes Defense Production Act as coronavirus response
President Trump announced today he will invoke the Defense Production Act, which would allow the administration to force American industry to ramp up production of medical supplies that are in short supply in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
Medical professionals want more supplies. Thanks to President Trump, help is on the way.
“There’s never been an instance like this where no matter what you have it’s not enough,” Trump said at a White House briefing with reporters on Wednesday.
“If we need to use it, we’ll be using it at full speed ahead.”
Hospitals and doctors have sounded the alarm that they are running low on protective gear, like masks and gowns, needed to insure those who are the frontlines of care don’t get sick.
“This action would ensure we have the materials we need at the ready, rather than wait for disruptions in the global supply chain to subside,” 57 House Democrats wrote in a letter to Trump last week, as reported by The Hill.
Supply chains are shaky due to the fact we shipped their production and jobs to China, presumably for cheap labor so Goldman Sachs and Wall St. could make more money and bet bigger bonuses.
China is now blocking exports of those products as they seek to combat their own pandemic.
